What is a pinhole ?
Pinhole cameras are similar to camera obscura because they both use a hole for the image to be produced. A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens but with a single small hole. When light passes through this hole and the image inverters to the opposite side of the box. One example of a similar pinhole that is part of us is the human eye. The human eye does exactly what a pinhole camera does, however our brain flips that image back around. That's why we don't see the world upside down.
How does a pinhole camera work ?
To get clear, sharp pictures with a pinhole camera it must remain very still while the shutter is open. You would have to use plenty of tape or a lump of modeling clay to hole the camera still. You can make pinhole cameras out of a lot of different materials form example: seashells, cardboard boxes, tins , coke cans, food, containers etc.
Who is Steven Pippin ?
Steven Pippin was an English artist used improvised photographic equipment and kinetic sculptures. Pippin normally uses objects such as bath tubs, wardrobes and washing machines converted so they can function as cameras. The process of converting the objects and their methods of operation, are as important as the results.

My photography
We used a pinhole bin that had already been to see how the images will come out.
WWWI think most of my pinhole images came out really good because most of the objects such as trees buildings etc. has clear come out in the photos, especially the bin one, although you can see our faces the surrounds and our figures are clearly shown.

EBITo improve my images I could have time how long each image should be, because I didn't do an accurate amount of time and left others out long, the I should have. I could also improve it by not moving as much as I did, i could do this by finding a flat surface to place it on.

Over all I think I might use a pinhole camera in the future because it's a good way to experiment with and you never know how your images are going to come out.
How to make a pinhole camera ?
Items you essentially need:
- A container. - Sharp knife. - Duck tape. - Scissors. - Sharp pin. - Tin foil. - Black matt paint. |
Step 1: Pick a container that has quite a good form and shape for instance, a biscuit tin or a hot chocolate tin.
Step 2: Paint or spray the inside of your container a dark colour preferably black. (Covering your camera prevents any light from reflection from occurring on the inside of the can.) Step 3: Cut a rectangular hole half way through your container. Step 4: Cut around 2.5cm square piece of aluminium foil, make sure it is nice and smooth. Use a small pin so you can make your little pin hole on your tin. But it has to be in the centre of the foil. Step 5: Attach the aluminium foil to your contain, make sure you pin hole is over the rectangular hole that you created. Step 6: Make a shutter with any material, so that you can open and close whenever you need it. Step 7: In the darkroom (under the red light) cut a piece of photographic paper make sure it fits inside your container. Step 8: Now take the camera outside and place it somewhere stable. |
